Compound Sentence

COMPOUND SENTENCE

If 2 or more sentences are connected with  a conjunction/s, so the
combined sentences are called compound sentence.
The arrangement can be as follows :
  1. Main Clause + Conj + Sub Clause + Conj + Sub Cl
                He got there and saw us but he said nothing.
  1. Conj + Sub Cl + Conj + Sub Cl + Main Cl
                As I’m busy and I have much work to do, I prefer to be alone.
  1. Conj + Sub Cl + Main Cl + Conj + Sub Cl
                If he arrives, you must tell him that I am not ready yet.
  1. Main Cl + Sub Cl
                I came home late because my boss asked me to finish the monthly report.

Kinds of Conjunctions :
And, that, but/ yet, although/ though/ even though, whereas/ while,
except, unless, because/ as/ for/ since, so that, so/ thus, if, or,
in order that, before, after, when/ by the time, as long as, etc.

Exercise :
Identify the MAIN CLAUSE and SUB CLAUSE of each sentence!
  1. I have been learning English since I was twelve years old.
  2. She is studying technology whereas her sister is studying law.
  3. By the time you get there they will have arranged everything.
  4. We must leave now or we will miss the train.
  5. I’ll join you after I finish writing this letter.

Put a correct conjunction for each sentence!
  1. We came to the conclusion although it was not so serious.
  2. They stopped to bought something while Jane was waiting in the car.
  3. I’m sure that he has done the test well because he has studied hard recently.
  4. After we got there, we tried to find the company that she had mentioned.
  5. I like it but I don’t buy it because it’s too expensive.
  6. He told me that he didn’t know why Eva was sick  yesterday.
  7. If  you not work harder you will fail.
  8. That it is possible we’ll open an internet café together.
  9. Although he is rich he’s not very happy because he has no friends.
  10. It was too bad that he had left when we arrived.
