COMPLEX SENTENCE

A.           Definition : penggabungan dua kalimat sederhana (lebih) menjadi satu dengan conjunction

(kata penghubung).

B.           Study this example :

The man who lives next door is very friendly.

   Main clause: The man is very friendly.

Sub   clause: who lives next door.

Clause adalah bagian dari sentence yang memiliki unsur S & P.

Simple sentence:

-          The man is very friendly.

-          He lives next door.

C.     Conjunctions of Adjective Clause :

Who, whom, which, that        : yang

Whose, of which                    : yang…………nya (untuk possessive).

D.     Steps to combine :

1.         Cari kata yang sama.

2.         Jika orang, perhatikan kata yang sama dikalimat kedua (sbg S atau O)

3.         Tentukan Conjunction.

4.         Gabungkan.

Perhatian !

Fungsi conjunction yaitu mengganti kata yang sama dari kalimat kedua.

E.      Examples :

1.         The woman is a TV reporter.

We met her in a bank yesterday.

The result: The woman who met her in a bank yesterday is a TV Reporter

2.         Where are the books?

I’ve given them to you.

The result: Where are the books which i've given to you

3.         Mr. Brown is my supervisor.

His son studies in Harvard University.

The result: Mr. Brown whose son studies in Harvard University is my supervisor

4.         How much is the price of the laptop?

Its shape is quite small.

The result: How much is the price of the laptop of which shape is quite small

EXERCISE:

1.         We need a female secretary.

The female secretary speaks and writes English fluently.

result : We need a female secretary who speaks and writes English fluently

2.         Have you called Mrs.Tobing ?

I introduced Mrs.Tobing to you last week.

result : Have you called Mrs. Tobing whom i introduced to you last week?

3.         Java is overpopulated.

Java is a relatively small island.

result : Java which is a relatively small island is overpopulated

4.         The lady is Mrs. Nana.

We know Mrs. Nana’s family very well.

result : The lady is Mrs. Nana whose family we know very well.

5.         It happened in Brazil.

Brazil is situated in South America.

result : It happened in Brazil that situated in South America

6.         These people should be transmigrated to other islands.

These people’s productivity is very low.

result : These people of which productivity is very low should be transmigrated to other islands.

7.         He looks like a man.

He has no sense of responsibility.

result : He looks like a man who has no sense of responsibility.

8.         I would like to say thank you to Mrs. Lina.

She has given me a chance to be a speaker in this seminar.

result : I would like to say thank you to Mrs. Lina who given me a chance to be a speaker in this seminar.

9.         She introduced me to her lawyer.

I wanted to discuss something very important with him.

result : She introduced me to her lawyer that I wanted to discuss something very important

10.     I know the girl.

She submitted this application letter this morning.

result : I know the girl who submitted this application letter this morning

11.     She is our receptionist.

Our receptionist has worked here for years.

result : She is our receptionist who worked here for years.

12.     Did she explain the reason?

She wouldn’t come for that reason.

result : Did she explain the reason that she wouldn't come?

13.     They can move to other areas.

They can have more land in the other areas.

result : They can have more land in the other areas that they can move

14.     We must face the consequences.

The consequences may be anything.

result : We must face the consequences that may be anything.

15.     Mak Nyak is the winner of the English Debating Contest.

We usually call her Mak Nyak.

result : We usually call her Mak Nyak that is the wnner of the English Debatng Contest.

16.     Sheilla goes to Surabaya once a week.

Her mother has been sick for six months.

result : Sheilla whose mother has been sick for six months goes to Surabaya once a week

17.     The girl is a friend of mine.

He is going to marry the girl.

result : He is going to marry the girl whom is a friend of mine.

18.     The advertisement has attracted my attention.

You set the advertisement in some newspaper two days ago.

result : You set the advertisement in some newspaper two days ago that has attracted my attention

19.     They are moving to Padang.

People speak Minangkabau in Padang.

result : They are moving to Padang of which people speak Minangkabau.

20.     The clerk types fast and accurately.

I told you the clerk’s name last night.

result : I told you the clerk's name whom types fast and accurately last night.
